Not necessarily the economy… who can point me to someone who knows… really… i’d pay for it….. i need to fucking know….Ok here’s the questions… well i’ll make a statement… I need to know how to stock market works… not some bullshit regurgitated information…. who controls price movement… i know it’s a bidding process.. but how much of the money is from large scale investors,(institutional) and how might they control price? what is the most widely used indicator? for people who are sucesfull in the market… what works for you? do you use technical indicators? do you try to guage the mood of the market on a particular day? Do you look at company fundamentals? I’ve been trading etf’s such as spy, vxx, and gld…. so i’ve been watching how people place their money on their idea of overall market movement…. any ideas here… i’m stuck.

Trading indicators are best used along with money management and good risk control, using trading indicators alone will not enable you to be a successful trader, even if you learn everything about Technical Trading Indicators the market is just too random and unless risk is controlled, over time your account will slowly get wiped out, regardless how good a “trader” you think you are.

This question was about Technical Trading Indicators and there have been some pretty good answers that should help in your trading, and especially in relation to Technical Trading Indicators, the answer has been posted in the categories listed below:

I purchased a 2004 Volvo S80 with a turbo charged engine and approximately 90k miles. Last fall it started emitting white smoke when it was at operating temperature and idling. At acceleration it would blow large amounts of the white smoke through 2nd and 3rd gears then clear up. I asked our Volvo mechanic about it and he advised it was normal. He explained that fuel tends to build up in the turbo when idling and the white smoke was that excess fuel burning off. I expressed my concern and wanted to trade the car in on a model with less miles. He told me that the car, at that point with approx. 100k miles, was just getting broke in. He told me, and I quote him exactly, " …you have to drive it like your mad at it".

About 3 weeks ago I stopped to check the mail before parking the car and while at idle RPM, a squealing noise with a knock behind it started and gradually got faster then suddenly stopped with no adverse reaction to the engine performance. I suspected it coming from the AC/heater blower fan as that seemed the general location from where it came. As a precaution I checked the engine oil and the level was good. Our oil change schedule was every 5k miles and that was due so I planned on making that appointment in the very near future.

Mothers Day, coming home, after pulling a mountain the squealing noise with the knock came back suddenly and gradually quickened in pace. I immediately turned of all AC/fan and it was still there so I knew it wasn’t the problem. I checked the gages and temp was perfect, no oil light, and check engine light was on as it had been due to what we were told from a persistent blown bulb indicator. On a downhill grade at this time I shifted into neutral ruling out any transmission issues. While in neutral I feathered the gas and the noise increased or decreased with the engine RPM. I knew then I had to get the car somewhere and shut it down. Less than 2 miles from the house I attempted to limp home. Before I got there the engine was loosing power and the car lost all momentum from power loss and the noise suddenly stopped after an audible pop. The car lost all power and stalled with temp still showing good and no oil light but check engine light was blinking.

I had the car towed to the Volvo shop we bought it from and on Monday was informed the engine had thrown a rod due to low engine oil. When I stopped in to see for myself the car had not been moved. I asked how they knew it had thrown a rod and it was explained that when they started the engine they could hear it. I am now being advised the best course of action is to buy a used engine with 60k miles and have it installed. What is your take on this situation?

Bit of a horse racing/investing question. The reason why I ask is that it was recently reported that the Breeders’ Cup board announced it is "exploring the possibility of using a single host site for all future Breeders’ Cup events."

DRF Editor in Chief Steve Crist, by process of elimination came to the conculsion that if this does come to fruition, Churchill Downs would be the highly probable venue: http://cristblog.drf.com/crist/

The theory makes much sense seeing that Churchill is not on either coastline. Now Churchill is a publicly traded company, and I would think that the Breeders Cup if held there each year, as well as Breeders Cup memoribilia sales would greatly increase Churchill’s year over year bottom line financially.

Wall Street is usually quick to pick up on these things, but yet the idea (if it happens) hasn’t been reflected in the stock price that I can see, which could either be an indicator it’s not going to happen or that many on Wall Street and in finance are "asleep at the wheel" on this one.

What do you all involved with horse racing think?

http://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ:CHDN&hl=en&sa=X&oi=suggest_finance&ct=title&aq=4&oq=chdn&aqi=g1g-s3b1

Trading indicators are best used along with money management and good risk control, using trading indicators alone will not enable you to be a successful trader, even if you learn everything about currency trading the market is just too random and unless risk is controlled, over time your account will slowly get wiped out, regardless how good a “trader” you think you are.

This question was about currency trading and there have been some pretty good answers that should help in your trading, and especially in relation to currency trading, the answer has been posted in the categories listed below:

I mean yes he needs to incorporate more defense to his coaching arsenal and needs to play more than an 8 man rotation, but he is a great coach regardless and his record/success speak for themselves. He has seen 2 Conference Finals, made a 20+ win team in the Suns and Knicks into 2 high octane offensive juggernauts, and made the Suns play the most exciting brand of basketball for a couple of seasons.

He made a young Knicks team play hard rather than give up something the team under Isiah did a lot they lacked passion and now the franchise has something to look forward to in a season they thankfully overachieved.

Look at it this way last year w. all the trades Kerr made to worsen the Suns for the future. With the talent the Suns possessed under the leadership of D’Antoni they managed to win 55 wins, which with all the struggling due to trades and roster changes was only 2 games beneath the Lakers for the Pacific division crown.

As, soon as Mike D left so did his system and that made their franchise player Nash disgruntled – which made the team worsen and miss the playoffs winning 46 games.

That is a 9 game digression in a years period. While, in NY he took a team where Walsh made drastic trades that would benefit the team as opposed to hurt them, like Kerr’s trades in the long run and the result under Mike D’s system and his leadership the Knicks won 32 games, which was a 9 game improvement from the 23 wins won by the franchise a year ago.

That is the ultimate +/- indicator and just imagine the Knicks because they are finally under the cap and headed under the right direction if they can reel in Chris Bosh and Michael Redd or any All-star tandem. Then Mike D can do a lot of damage w. that for David Lee, Wilson Chandler, Chris Duhon, and Danilo Gallinari will be complimented by a talented vet in Al Harrington for a full year next year and 2 possible All-stars in 2010. That can rival the talent Mike D had in PHX.

The euro rocketed to a two-month high of .29 and sterling jumped two cents to almost .54 after the Fed confessed that the US economy may not recover for five or six years. Far from winding down emergency stimulus, the bank may need a fresh blast of bond purchases or quantitative easing.

Usually the dollar serves as a safe haven whenever the world takes fright, and there was plenty of sobering news from China and other quarters on Thursday. Not this time. The US itself has become the problem.
"The worm is turning," said David Bloom, currency chief at HSBC. "We’re in a world of rotating sovereign crises. The market seems to become obsessed with one idea at a time, then violently swings towards another. People thought the euro would break-up. Now we’re moving into a new phase because we’re hearing alarm bells of a US double dip."

Mr Bloom said a deep change is under way in investor psychology as funds and central banks respond to the blizzard of shocking US data and again focus on the fragility of an economy where public debt is surging towards 100pc of GDP, not helped by the malaise enveloping the Obama White House. "The Europeans have aired their dirty debt in public and taken some measures to address it, whilst the US has not," he said.

The Fed minutes warned of "significant downside risks" and a possible slide into deflation, an admission that zero interest rates, .75 trillion of QE, and a fiscal deficit above 10pc of GDP have so far failed to lift the economy out of a structural slump.

"The Committee would need to consider whether further policy stimulus might become appropriate if the outlook were to worsen appreciably," it said. The economy might not regain its "longer-run path" until 2016.

"The Fed is throwing in the towel," said Gabriel Stein, of Lombard Street Research. "They are preparing to start QE again. This was predictable because the M3 broad money supply has been contracting for months."

The Fed minutes amount to a policy thunderbolt, evidence of how quickly the recovery has lost steam. Just weeks ago the Fed was mapping out withdrawal of stimulus.

Goldman Sachs said it expects the euro to rise to .35 by the end of the year. The yen will appreciate to ¥83, through the pain barrier for most of Japan’s big exporters. The new twist is that SAFE, China’s .4 trillion fund, has begun buying record amounts of Japanese bonds, a shift in reserve allocation away from the dollar.

The signs of a deep and sudden slowdown in the US are becoming ever clearer as the "sugar rush" from the Obama fiscal stimulus wears off and the inventory boost fades. California, Illinois and other states are cutting spending, tightening US fiscal policy by 0.8pc of GDP.

Thursday’s plunge in the Philadelphia Fed’s July index of new manufacturing orders to –4.3 suggests that the economy may have buckled abruptly, as it did in mid-2008. The Economic Cycle Research Institute’s ECRI leading indicator has tumbled, reaching –8.3pc last week. This points to a sharp slowdown or recession within three months.

While US port data looked buoyant in June, the details were troubling. Outbound traffic from Long Beach fell from 139,000 containers in May to 116,000 in June. Shipments from Los Angeles fell from 161,000 to 155,000. This drop in exports is worsening the US trade deficit, eroding the dollar.

The US workforce has shrunk by a 1m over the past two months as discouraged jobless give up the hunt. Retail sales have fallen for the past two months. New homes sales crashed to 300,000 in May after tax credits ran out, the lowest since records began in 1963. Mortgage applications have fallen by 42pc to 13-year low since April. Paul Dales at Capital Economics said the "shadow inventory" of unsold properties has risen to 7.8m. "The double dip in housing has begun," he said.

Alcoa, CSX, Intel, and JP Morgan have reported good earnings, but they mostly did so in July 2008 just before their shares collapsed. Such earnings rarely catch turning points and can be a lagging indicator. Profits have been boosted in this cycle by cost-cutting, which is self-defeating for the economy as a whole.

The minutes confirm the Fed is split down the middle over QE. Fed watchers say the Board in Washington wants to be ready to launch another round of bond purchases if necessary, pushing the banks balance sheet from .4 trillion towards trillion, but hawks at the regional banks are highly sceptical.

A study by the San Francisco Fed said the interest rates need to be –4.5pc to stabilise the economy under the Fed’s "rule of thumb". Since this is impossible, massive QE needs to make up the difference.

Tim Congdon from International Monetary Re

Peer-Reviewed Study Rocks Climate Debate! ‘Nature not man responsible for recent global warming…little or none of late 20th century warming and cooling can be attributed to humans’

Nature not man responsible for recent global warming

Three Australasian researchers have shown that natural forces are the dominant influence on climate, in a study just published in the highly-regarded Journal of Geophysical Research. According to this study little or none of the late 20th century global warming and cooling can be attributed to human activity.

The research, by Chris de Freitas, a climate scientist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, John McLean (Melbourne) and Bob Carter (James Cook University), finds that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a key indicator of global atmospheric temperatures seven months later. As an additional influence, intermittent volcanic activity injects cooling aerosols into the atmosphere and produces significant cooling.

"The surge in global temperatures since 1977 can be attributed to a 1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean that made warming El Niño conditions more likely than they were over the previous 30 years and cooling La Niña conditions less likely" says corresponding author de Freitas.

"We have shown that internal global climate-system variability accounts for at least 80% of the observed global climate variation over the past half-century. It may even be more if the period of influence of major volcanoes can be more clearly identified and the corresponding data excluded from the analysis.”

Climate researchers have long been aware that ENSO events influence global temperature, for example causing a high temperature spike in 1998 and a subsequent fall as conditions moved to La Niña. It is also well known that volcanic activity has a cooling influence, and as is well documented by the effects of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption.

The new paper draws these two strands of climate control together and shows, by demonstrating a strong relationship between the Southern Oscillation and lower-atmospheric temperature, that ENSO has been a major temperature influence since continuous measurement of lower-atmospheric temperature first began in 1958.

According to the three researchers, ENSO-related warming during El Niño conditions is caused by a stronger Hadley Cell circulation moving warm tropical air into the mid-latitudes. During La Niña conditions the Pacific Ocean is cooler and the Walker circulation, west to east in the upper atmosphere along the equator, dominates.

"When climate models failed to retrospectively produce the temperatures since 1950 the modellers added some estimated influences of carbon dioxide to make up the shortfall," says McLean.

"The IPCC acknowledges in its 4th Assessment Report that ENSO conditions cannot be predicted more than about 12 months ahead, so the output of climate models that could not predict ENSO conditions were being compared to temperatures during a period that was dominated by those influences. It’s no wonder that model outputs have been so inaccurate, and it is clear that future modelling must incorporate the ENSO effect if it is to be meaningful."

Bob Carter, one of four scientists who has recently questioned the justification for the proposed Australian emissions trading scheme, says that this paper has significant consequences for public climate policy.

"The close relationship between ENSO and global temperature, as described in the paper, leaves little room for any warming driven by human carbon dioxide emissions. The available data indicate that future global temperatures will continue to change primarily in response to ENSO cycling, volcanic activity and solar changes.”

“Our paper confirms what many scientists already know: which is that no scientific justification exists for emissions regulation, and that, irrespective of the severity of the cuts proposed, ETS (emission trading scheme) will exert no measurable effect on future climate.”

–

McLean, J. D., C. R. de Freitas, and R. M. Carter (2009), Influence of the Southern Oscillation on tropospheric temperature, Journal of Geophysical Research, 114, D14104, doi:10.1029/2008JD011637.

This figure from the McLean et al (2009) research shows that mean monthly global temperature (MSU GTTA) corresponds in general terms with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) of seven months earlier. The SOI is a rough indicator of general atmospheric circulation and thus global climate change. The possible influence of the Rabaul volcanic eruption is shown.

Excerpted Abstract of the Paper appearing in the Journal of Geophysical Research:

Time series for the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and global tropospheric temperature anomalies (GTTA) are compared for the 1958?2008 period. GTTA are represented by data from satellite microwave sensing units (MSU) for the period 1980–2008 and from radiosondes (RATPAC) for 1958–2008. Aft

The complete course is 00 and they were pushy for us to take the class so I didn’t feel so confident about it, but i read up on the subject a bit and did a trial trade for about 30 days, I was up a lot at one point (about 00) but in the end of the month i pretty muich broke even. WIth more knowledge and a proper education on the subject can it be a long term way of makin money?
DEAR ALL, thanks for your responses, overall you seem to think currency trading is high risk and not really a viable way of making money from home. I should have mentioned in my question that if i were to do it, i would want to rely more on technical analysis and all the ratios and different theorems etc. I would also be making trades that are from about 30 minutes to at most one day. Does this change anyones opinion on the subject?

I heard something interesting related to the world economic meltdown. It was suggested this could be the result of economic terrorism. This week it was reported that the World Bank had been hacked several times over the past year or so. We know that there are many active, experienced hackers in Russia and China who have made it into some very sensitive computer systems in recent years.

There has been a lot of activity at the last minute on the stock exchanges that send indicators downward. This last minute activity happens so late in the trading day, that the markets don’t have time to respond.

Makes me think. Has the world been plunged into the pages of Tom Clancy techno thriller novel playing out on the reality side of the book?

Well thought out comments are welcome.
Oh yes! "Debt Of Honor"! I forgot about that Clancy classic! Rewritten the "bad guys" would be Russians and NGO terrorist types hacking away on their computers!
Marcus, true, but people are behind the computer programs that trip at the last minute. Who is behind the "snipes"?

It’s rather like "sniping" on eBay…..

Trading indicators are best used along with money management and good risk control, using trading indicators alone will not enable you to be a successful trader, even if you learn everything about trading indicators the market is just too random and unless risk is controlled, over time your account will slowly get wiped out, regardless how good a “trader” you think you are.

This question was about trading indicators and there have been some pretty good answers that should help in your trading, and especially in relation to trading indicators, the answer has been posted in the categories listed below:

An OTC stock (very stable, 100yo company) in my portfolio has suffered massive swings in price "most recent price" in the last week or so. I am not concerned about the stock, or the price. I want to be clear.

My issue is how my brokerage is pricing the stock.

Since its purchase, the stock appeared stable and matched the last sale price. That price was visible on otcmarkets and otcbb as well as a host of other sites.

A few days ago, the price was down 40%+/-. I called the brokerage and was informed that the price is based on "the lowest active bid". It took the trading rep 20++ mins to get back to me on this.

Today, the stock is up 47% which matches the highest active bid on otcbb and otcmarkets.

On their website, in my portfolio it states basically that securities are priced at days close and if that is not available, the last price traded – or something to that affect.

So, I am mystified at how this (all stocks, all OTC stocks??) are priced (by my brokerage).

What is the industry standard and SEC guidelines in this regard?

Why would a stock priced be based on a bid anyway? At least the ask is far closer indicator of price. When the stock is thinly traded is not the best price the price the stock last sold/traded at?

Do I have an issue here? Do I have a serious issue here? I am in the process of attempting to acquire a large amount of this stock and I am panicked by he price swings and the havoc it creates in my portfolio. Is this an issue that needs to be brought "higher up the food chain"?

For reasons I don’t want to bore you with, I can’t leave the brokerage for 18mos and this imo a critical time to acquire this sock.

My last emails have gone unanswered. An email response that was returned was full of generalities that had little or nothing to do with the issue – canned pap. Email prior to that still unanswered.

Please feel free to email me from an anonymous address if you fee any way liable. I need some answers.
